Stone Soup...

Good Morning!

Another opportunity to wish you a happy holiday!

The holiday season (for whatever reason you celebrate) and the special offering it offers (for me Christmas) has come and gone...or has it?

I have come to realize (with more than just words) that I do not have wait, an entire year, to live like I do on that day...

I refuse to let this holiday go...and it feelings and its actions...

I have found that one of the most basic elements of people is that everyone (except for a meager minority) has greed at the ultimate base of their existence...

Since people are basically greedy...choosing what we are greedy about is very important.

I choose to be greedy about Christmas...and what it means...charity...giving...caring...love with not expectation with return...

If I have to be greedy about something...let it be about Christmas...

My pre-new year's resolution is to work to make as many days like Christmas as I can...

Enough Said on this...for a while...

The pressures of the season are behind you...and it is time again to take count of where you are at and where you wish to go...

Again...That sounds a lot like News Years Eve!

Another holiday...to be celebrated and enjoyed!  (One of my favorites!)

That too should be an everyday event

It is for truly successful people! It is one of their habits!

If you look on your life on a daily basis...you'll never get depressed...

...Look at what you've tried...

...Look at what didn't work...

...Look at what did work...

...And look how far I have come!

Nothing can stop you!

An early New Year's toast...a special one in remembrance of my mentor...

"We won some or we learn something...in either case...we were successful..."

Life is a blessing to those who look at each event in its proper perspective...

Shifting Gears...

Of all the pathogens that effect mankind...can you identify the one that has no immunization or cure and will never have one?

Here is a hint...it has destroyed many societies and cultures...far beyond the impact of the black plague...or the flu...or starvation...or thirst...

It remains as much of a threat to societies and cultures...today...as it did to primitive man...

...think...

...think...

...think...

Many will answer HIV...

Many will answer cancer...

The fact of the matter is...our science recognizes that both of these have the potential of eradication...so there is time, effort and money being spent on it...they will be cured!

It is not those...

The answer to that question is much more allusive...

Without belaboring this discussion...to the point of frustration…

The incurable threat to society and culture disease oft is "an idea..."

It is "ideas" that threaten to change the foundations of society...

It is "ideas" that threaten the existence of cultures...

It is the thoughts of people who threaten the status quo and spark meaningful and significant change...

Ideas as the well-spring of change...and a threat to status quo...that is not all bad...when they are the right ideas!

...for those who are brave enough to think them trough...feed the right ones and give them substance...

We would not be here if it were not for "ideas."

Ideas can not be stopped...and the proponents of stability and comfort fear them...and will attempt to suppress them as if their lives depended upon it...because they do!

Do not allow your ideas and thoughts be stopped...think...and allow it to expand!

Inside those thoughts are the beginning of change...

Buckminster Fuller once said, "...we do not have an energy crisis...we have a creativity crisis!"

Use your thoughts and ideas...and insight to make your world a better place...or "at least the part that matters!" (that's my line)

Shifting Gears...Again!

A little over 18 months ago...I recalled the old story of "Stone Soup"

One of the things that I didn’t mention then was that "Stone Soup" is a story about Christmas (I know that it is a push, but go with it)...OK...not about Christmas...but about people who ultimately refused to let the season pass...and as a result sparked the giving spirit within individuals...to share what small amounts of food they had as an ingredient in a soup...

The result of the sharing was something bigger than the individual part added up to!

A wonderful soup...a feast that fed the entire town!

You are capable of stone soup!

By bringing the thought and ideas of people together...the sum of the individual thoughts will provide a feast, far beyond the expectations of the entire town!

Christmas does not need to be behind us!

And many of the gifts that we share can not be purchased...

It is those gifts that carry the most special value...

The season of sharing and giving should carry on...it should be a habit...

Do not be afraid to share thoughts...

Shifting gears...AGAIN!

Effective people dedicate a portion of their blessings to help the less fortunate...They recognize their blessing and share it without an expectation of return...

A benefit of who you are is that you receive more than you need as a result of your work...

It is easy to start believing that you earned it and deserve it...

Don't fall prey to that...

Do not be afraid to give a portion of your blessings back...

Charity is a wonderful trait that does not truly happen enough...

Reaching today's destination...

I could write for pages on keeping the spirit of the holidays alive everyday...but let's be realistic...it will not happen...

We'll get caught up in the "fray of today" and it will die a quick death and no one will notice...

It is sad...but that's life...

Perhaps the best that we can expect is that during the year...the holiday season will spark and we'll notice and have it again for a moment sometime in March or August...or October...who knows...

If that happens...don't ignore it...

Have a Happy Every-day...or just a fun time!

21st Century Mentoring Opportunities...

Good Morning!

I bet that you have had many challenges this week...one of the most challenging is that the year is winding down and there is the temptation to take time off and rest...others are worried about what next year will bring...

The "year end" is a threatening time for many reasons...

It makes you step back and assess your accomplishments over the past year...and inevitably you feel like a failure...DO NOT allow the world to do that to you...

Many organizations (in good times or bad) are reorganizing for the year ahead and there is the chance that you'll be on the next reduction...BIG DEAL!

There is a temptation to stop...because noone else is working...DON'T

This is oftentimes is the best time for your to make huge headway...do not fall prey to complacency...

It is easy to use the holiday spirits and get off course...

It is also a time to be with friends and family...DO NOT get me wrong...YOU need to do that!

Yet...it is time for you to pick the vital few things and focus on them...use the season to your advantage to make BIG things happen and create a foundation for your legacy!

I am always on the look-out for opportunities to coach individuals who can take my advice and combine it with their experience and take themselves to the next level.  Of late...that face to face opportunity has ebbed...and I miss that...you know how I light-up when I find one of those situations...

Then I realized that there were many of those situations all around me!  Their faces had just changed slightly and I hadn't recognized them!

Shifting Gears!

I have been challenged by some huge out of the box thoughts this week...they (in all probability) are way-off course if taken for what they are saying...but dig deeper and find the lessons within them...allow them to free your brain.  They remind me of how we can allow arrogance to get in the way of truth...

Think about this one...(Sitzen Denken)

Our ancestors (of homo sapiens) first appeared on the earth about 4.5 million years ago...most of the initial variants became extinct as a result of a global catestrophe.  It is estimated that only about 40 females of child-bearing capability survived whatever it was...at the lowpoint...that is pretty scary!  We were more than an endangered species...

Homo sapiens (us) appeared about 100,000 years ago...and the intellectual development has just blossomed.  Think of where we have come from our stone age tools to the International Space Station...and our understanding of the universe and physics...and...whatever...

It absolutely boggles my mind...

In a flash...we have increased our intellect in logarithmic proportions...

Think of what our intellectual development would be if we are allowed to exist for 200 million years!

That is the point...

There have been creatures that did!

The dinosaurs...their reign was 2000 times longer than ours!

Shear probability tells me that the possibility that they were intellectually more advanced than us exists!

But my human arrogance stands in the way...they were just animals...lizards at that!

Do you realize that there is a period in which sea creatures existed that is 2000 times longer than the reign of the dinosaurs?

The statistical probability of them being more intellectually more advanced is HUGE!

But my human arrogance gets in the way...they were just fish and crawly things...

There was an obscure statistical theory once presented that attacked the significance of human intelligence...it mathematically showed that everything ever written can be done so by putting millions of apes banging randomly at typewriters (keyboards in modern terms).  All you need is time and randomness The significance of intelligence decreases in significance and it actually becomes just a part of the way things are...

Given enough time...language will randomly will develop...given enough time...intelligence evolves...

Time was on the side of the "fish and crawly things" and the dinosaurs...

Time changes the significance of human intelligence!

It is important for us to recognize that Nature itself has shown us that intelligence is just a part of the natural progression.  It is an attribute that evolves...it was given to humans...but why should we think that it was reserved solely for our species?  It is not an exclusive trait...

Given this logic...dinosaurs were smarter than us...

What are the ramifications?

I do not believe that, but what I learned from this exercise is that it is important to consider various versions of reality and even obscure logical possibilities to avert biases even when there is no logical evidence direct proof that those possibilities exist!

It is about our seeing through the fog of arrogance...even when nothing is evident to prove that the obscure is true...

OR IS THERE?

If you think the last few paragraphs run the potential of getting me labeled as WEIRD...the next one will get me a tattoo!

While I was reflecting on the discussions that My Mentor and I had about the pyramids...I realize a human arrogance based paradigm exists in it also!

That paradigm is that we assume that the pyramids were built by humans!

Consider a lowly band of nomadic people roaming across the Nile Delta...suddenly they come across these huge monuments...at first they are apprehensive...and watch them from afar...and they realized that they were abandoned...or the builders were long since dead...so they moved in...and claimed them as there own...

About the same time some Yucatan natives got tired of Cancun and moved slightly inland...guess what they found?  Pyramids!  They watched from afar to ensure that the builders no longer resided there and they took them over...

There were a few druids skipping across the plains and what did they come across...a stone hendge...noone was around so they claimed it as their own!

I am not claiming that some extraterrestrials built them and took off...

But is to say...perhaps they were not constructed by humans...

Logic tells us that is is a stretch to think that humans can cut and handle 40 ton blocks!  That is 80,000 pounds or the equivalent of 2 fully loaded tractor-trailers...

What if they were build by a creature that handled 40 tons blocks like a child handles wooden building blocks?

Our arrogance forces us to believe that because the structures were advanced...they were built by humans...

Whether it be Stone Hendge or the Central American pyramids and temples?

What if the HUGE statues of people were decoys like the ones used by duck hunters?
What if man was nothing more than a remodeler who adapted the existing structures to their own needs...after finding the foundations prebuilt?

A little far fetched...but there is no proof or dating available related to the actual construction...it is all theory and speculation which has at its very foundation that anything done that appears advanced was done so by humans...

When you take into consideration the earlier part of the discussion...dinosaurs could mess with 40 ton blocks a lot easier than frail and underfed humans!

This is some weird science...and not meant to be considered as a theory of construction...but as a word of caution that specific types of arrogance can blind us from the truth! OR...at minimum taint the direction of thought in such a way that we miss reality entirely!

If you think about all the great developments in society...and assume that they can only be accomplished by people with PhDs...you will be tainted in the same way!

Be ever conscious of even the slightest hints at human or organizational arrogance...they can taint your efforts in discerning the truth!

Shifting Gears!
The Power of Possibility thinking

During the late 1980's and early 1990's the heros were the "nay sayers"...and those who could identify the weaknesses within ideas and recommendations and relentlessly pound on them until the real heros gave up!

These people were lauded...

The creative people retreated and were cloistered...

Then the climate changed again and the "nay sayers" were shown for what they really were!

"Killer phrase" emails went viral!

The "nay sayers" couldn't stand for their loss of stature...

In a counter attack...they changed their language (ever so slightly) so that they could jade their demented strategy...they began using terms like "positive pushback" and "challenge"...we have opportunities...not problems...and so on...

I am sad to report that the "nay sayers" still exist...

Some outdated and dying organizations still promote "nay saying"...but let me assure you that these people are passe!  This management methodology is poison..."Nay Sayers" are a detriment to organizations...especially to those who wish to survive in the 21st century...

A 21st century organization can not afford to have anyone waste valuable time and resources...pushing back on ideas and concepts...or challenging them...Time arguing senseless views is one type of waste...

The 21st century organization needs people who can take an idea and make it reality...or take it to the next level...

Let me put this into an example that makes it easier for me to communicate...

Surviving in the 21st century is like challenging one of the top 5 mountain peaks in the world...

You are finalizing your trip....and now...you have to select a climbing partner...

What kind of partner are you going to choose...?

One that says...As we are climbing Mount Everest...I will push back and challenge you all along the way...(The Nay Sayer)

...or...

A possibility thinker who says that he or she will help you make this happen? in fact we'll get to the K2 peak?

Is my point clear?

That is why I recommend that you make the word "but" extinct in your vocabulary...and replace it entirely with "AND."  "But" is the purvey of "Nay Sayers" and the word of "push-back!"

I refuse to hire people who promise me pushback and challenge!  It is a waste of my valuable time and energy...I have mountains to climb!  I do not need people who create resistance...I need path clearers!  Their presence is there to make things happen and make them better than I could ever have!

Possibility thinking is part of my CIMM (Continuous Improvement Management Methodology).

We can not afford to be like the 20th century losers and promote we can't do that because...this does not mean that we can not voice your concerns...Find the problems and bring with them the way to show how you can adapt...That is possibility thinking!

Animals that can adapt...survive...animals that can not go the way of dinosaurs...

The last thing that I want is a climbing partner that pushes me backward as I near the summit...

Shifting gears...again!

I find inspiration and lessons to be learned in the most unique places and experiences or the experiences of others...

As of late...Napolean!  I refuse to reference a personality without a knowledge of that individual...I was about to use his "name in vain" when I decided to research him further...

The Napolean that we know from history is a tyrant and his name used by psychologists for a "short person disorder" and we know little of his 40 to 50 major military victories,,,but his "Waterloo."

What I discovered was interesting...the history of Napolean was primarily a "slur campaign" propagated by British historians.  Napolean was an embarrassment to the British empire so much of what is written and recorded was done so by the British, with defaming him in mind.

I found some interesting information about him on the opposite end of the internet too!

Realizing that the truth is probably somewhere halfway in between...I read those also...

What inspired me was not the military genius or his Napoleanic code (which was brilliant) or his vision, but one year of his life...while he was in exile.

Napolean was ousted from power as Emperor of France and exiled to the island of Elba.  Elba did not have to be a prison...it was worse...just being dropped on its shores was a death sentence.  Elba had 12,000 inhabitants.  Ships would not stop there...it was the worse of the worse...

Napolean's wife and son were sent to another city...so they were separated...

Napolean could have fell into depression...or retirement...but instead...he set about to unify the island and help it be, what it could be...I can see him saying..."Well all I have is Elba to help...France didn't want me...I will do what I can do with what I can do it with..."

In one year...Napolean created a centralized landfill, a public water system, a sewer system, build a navy, and army, 2 or 3 iron mines. a smelting factory...and many other things...

The 12,000 inhabitants became unified...a nation of sorts...

IN A YEAR!

Napolean then returned to mainland Europe to find his wife and son and during his trek...was again recognized as Emperor of France!

Great leaders do not take sets backs...they do what they can do...with what they have...

If you can't have France...OH WELL!  Help Elba!

Great Leaders are appreciative for what they have and earn the right to move on to bigger things...by first showing appreciation for where they are...

High aspirations are great...but there is so many great things to extract from the present...learn to be TOTALLY engaged in the here and now...use it as a stepping stone back to your mainland!

Keep the right motives in mind!

Napolean did amazing things in 1 year!  Elba is still a jewel...and Napolean is the reason!

Enough Said!

The Christmas season is a time to reflect and be thankful!

I was thinking back to what last year was like!  We were on a high...and lifting higher...

The "Project Science Fair" was presented in Alpharetta...it was showing the organization...what we could do at minimum!  The sky was the limit...it was an awesome day...

It was a time of soaring...What a great thing to be thankful for...

Do not forget that time in your life...look back a year and see how far you have come!

I am constantly thankful for the opportunites that I have been given and where that has been taken by great players like you!

I am constantly thankful for what I have now...and I am constantly striving to do the best with what I have!

You should consider this also...

You should not move on until you have proven that you can do amazing things with what you already have!

Take this time to identify the VITAL few things that you need to do great and beautiful things with...

Everyone is an exile...turn your Elba into a gem!

Enough Said!

The Greatest Injustice Done...to our Children...

Good Morning!

What a week!

Things do not comes easily all of the time...

...sometimes it requires sheer effort...and will power...

Most important is the realization of the fact that most great things are not done in a vacuum...great accomplishments require help!

DO NOT ever give up...no matter how frustrating it may get!

I am continuously reminded of this important characteristic of success.

Shifting Gears!

I was watching a TV show the other day...Criminal Minds...

I really like watching the psychology of it...it is quite accurate...and contains many little lessons that we can learn from ...especially things to avoid!  LOL!

There was a discussion between two of the FBI officers, that sparked some thoughts...and further investigation...and I found it was true...

One agent asked a second...Do you know what the biggest injustice done to the youth of our society?

The other on answered..."Stranger Danger..."

Many of you probably remember seeing the little session put on by well-intentioned schools and law enforcement agencies...but the fact of the matter is...

Children are in more danger from people they know than from strangers!

Stranger Danger totally shifted the attention away from the real souce of child dangers!

It was so catchy that it became a fad phrase!

People believed it!  Our society promoted it blindly and made it part of grade school programs and TV ad campaigns...and it got numerous awards...

The fact of the matter is that 100s times more children are hurt and molested by people that they knew than strangers...

The laws of probabilities support that...it is just that stranger abductions get a lot of sensationalized publicity...especially when it is compared to some issue within a family...which is generally swept under the rug...

The same thing holds true in organizations...

Your danger lies not in the people you do not know...but in the people that you do!

The threat is from people that you trust...

Especially people who ask you to trust them...

The fact of the matter is that we tend to trust them...because we know them and somewhere deep in our subconscious it has been planted that since we know them we can trust them...

Guess where that came from?

"Stranger Danger!"

Organizational criminals use that weakness to their advantage!

The solution is a VERY simple one...We must be ever-conscious of that fact to safefguard ourselves from the dangers of organizational molestation!  And that these sick people are people that we know and trust...

On a less figurative topic...and much more pressing...

We must safeguard our children from these threats...not from strangers...but from those that they know...

The focus should be on identifying abnormal behaviors...and not on bad tags...like strangers!

The tag "stranger" is an unwarranted predjuice...it is no more valid than "ALL Germans drink beer in excess!"

ALL strangers pose a threat!  What about the doctor or specialist...or the policeman...or a counsellor?

We predisposition our children to distrust the very people who are sworn to help!

Do you see what I am saying?

We allowed a bad public relations program skew our thoughts and actions without question...because it was catchy!

These are the things upon which damaging paradigms are built upon!

Drop the "Stranger Danger" from affecting your behaviors and look closer to home...the real criminals stand in your midst!

Enough of the fatherly advice!

SHIFTING GEARS...sort of!

iTalentCafe...(I know that you are sick of it)...the new website is being built as I write!  I am so excited!  It really is a data collection and comparison machine!

It is integrated across numerous social networks across the internet!  By the time we get done...it will be integrated across about 100 social networks!  That is huge and it is not the effort of a huge corporation...just me and another guy!

IT IS the product of a DMADD analysis...including the Triz...

I am so proud of it!

I am going to need you help in spreading the word about it...when the new site goes live...

I hope to get it over the tipping point in relatively short order and can only do so with your help!

When it is time...PLEASE promote the link to everyone you have attached to your social networks...and ask them to do the same!

Its mission is to connect REAL TALENT to REAL NEEDS!

It will be an awesome ride...if I can get your help!

This thing is going to make Ladders and Monster and Linkedin look like a dinosaur!

OK...enough fanaticism!

For those who have ears to hear...when an airplane is climbing...it is OK...when it is descending...it is crashing!

Think about this in relation to your work and your organization...

Are you moving up in the organization...are you moving up in the eyes of your customers...are you moving up in the market?

You can gauge your health with that simple "tongue in cheek" axiom!

Pay careful attention...

Take appropriate action...

You are a person of proaction...that is OK...but the real leaders are those of prediction!

That is the "PRE" to the "PRO"

Be smart!

This is a short update this week...

Not because I have nothing to say...but because I want to emphasize the few things that are worth saying...

1 - Put Stranger Danger in its proper place...There is a direct relationship between the amount of "Danger" that a person possesses and their proximity to you...this means that those who are closest pose the greatest threat!

2 - Spread the word about iTalentCafe.  Sign-up for one of the groups on Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter or the website.  Those pioneering souls have the opportunity to be our Beta testers and get extended benefits.

3 - Be "Pre" rather than "Pro"  keep an ever watchful eye on the direction of travel that you and/or your effort is going...moving up is great...moving flat is OK for a while...moving down is a good indicator of a crash...even a landing has a huge potential for a crash...do you implicitly trust your pilot?

The point to be made is that nothing worth having comes easily...
...It must be worked for...
...It must be guarded...
...It must be continuously monitored...

Do not run blindly...or deceive yourself into the "all is good" attitude...

Pura Vida!

Where did Santa go?

Here is a "Special Edition" blog that you might want to share with your children.

As I thought about it today...I realized that many of the traits that we attribute to Santa disappeared around the same time we realized that the economy was in collapse...October 2009.

Good Morning!

A little over a year ago...the Santa that we all knew and loved disappeared!

Where did that Santa go?

Let me explain...where I think that he went...

You probably heard that in October 2009 there was a significant economic event that affected the entire world.

It actually did not happen on a specific day (or even during that month), but October 2009 was when we realized how bad it had gotten.

It was called an economic collapse or crash...

The economic crash of October 2009 was actually when we realized that...
...We were living on too much credit and...
...We had an unrealistic hope that future values of everything we owned was going to go up.

The funny thing about it...in October 1929 someting very similar happened!  You would think that we would learn!

It was a bad month!

Many people lost their jobs in that month and the months after that.  Chances are that someone in your family or at least, someone you know, has lost their job in the past year and can not find another one.

This time is especially sad for them...the holidays are not going to be as good as they were in the past...

Santa is not visiting many of those families...

In fact, because of October 2009, the Santa of the 1990's has all but disappeared...

Or at least what we thought that he stood for...

Yes...he disappeared October 2009!

That is...if the adults have learned their lesson about credit!

You can no longer expect to get gifts because you promise to be good and keep your rooms clean and get your homework done and be nice to your brothers and sisters...

What many adults learned in October 2009 was that the value of promises went away when we realized that we can not count on them...

It is when adults finally realized that people have lost their honesty!

This is one of the things that made Santa disappear...

What happened last October was all of our fault.

One of the reasons it happened...was that we wanted you to have everything we never had...and then you learned to expect that...

Another one of the reasons was that...we were so caught up working and making money...that we felt guilty for not being there when we needed to...so we gave you everything that you wanted...to try to make up for not being there...

Another reason was that...we forgot to teach you some of the important lessons that we learned when we were young...and that was because we were so busy with our jobs and careers and aspirations...

Things are different now...

In the olden days...Santa only gave presents to people who earned it...or deserved it...remember the phrase "...good little boys and girls?"

But we made the mistake of allowing you to think that you deserved anything you wanted...no matter what you did or didn't do...

We were letting you live on credit...just like we were doing...that is a bad lesson to learn...

Think about it...when you played soccer or baseball or did anything...EVERYONE got a trophy...that was wrong!

Trophies are supposed to be earned.  If you do not work...why do you think you should get someting for it?  Because we taught you that...

Over time you started believing that you deserved everything and that we were bad parents for not getting whatever you wanted...that is wrong too!

We should have been giving you important life lessons instead...
When you believed in Santa...you were living in the world of credit...just like we were doing...

You got toys and gifts because you were cute and that we had many hopes and dreams for you...we believed in you...and your future...

Then you found out that Santa was just a story...

That was when you grew up and reality should have been put into place...and we should have started giving you the real life lessons...

Just like October 2009 did to us...

It was October 2009 when many of us grew up!

I do not know why...but when you stopped believing in Santa...we kept treating you like children

We didn't allow you to see what the real world is like...

The funny thing is that many adults are acting like kids...

They are asking the government to help them pull out of their problems...and make the bad things go away!

PLEASE MAKE THE MONSTERS GO AWAY!  BAIL US OUT!

This is a good time to teach everyone that you get what you want...by FIRST giving others what they want from you...NO CREDIT...STRAIGHT CASH...

We need to teach you that when you eat...you should not make a bigger mess and extra work for us to clean-up after you...

We need to teach you that your room needs to be really clean...
We need to teach you that homework is NOT about completing an assignment...but about learning...that handing in a piece of paper is not the real goal, but learning how to do it, without errors is more important...

We need to teach you that where ever you go or whenever you do something...you leave the place better for your having been there...

We need to teach you that you need to work first and play your video games second...

We need to teach you that about how important honesty is...

and that is just the beginning...of the lessons we should have taught you...but I think that we need to learn a few new ones too!

We are sorry...

Santa is gone...

But the neat thing about Santa is that we can bring him back to life...

We can't live on credit any longer...

Before you ask for your gifts this holiday season...ask yourself what have I done to earn them?

How many times has mom or dad had to pick up after you...or ask you to clean your room...or made you a meal...or bought you something already?

How many times did what you do cause a lot more work for your parents...

What did you do to get what you think you deserve to get?

Step up and be a real part of the family...rather than a burden!

Santa is gone!

It is up to us to bring him back!

Carrying on the Legacy...

Good Morning!

How did you do this past week?

It is always hard to reconnect after an extended weekend...but I know that you are already back into the swing!

Good Job!

I recently reconnected with a high school teacher Dr Barbara Ferguson...what a fantastic experience!

Since I was a sophomore (in High School)...we have been in touch...that is almost a span of 40 years!

Over the years...the frequency of our contact has diminished, but the connection has not!

She was one of three pivotal and life changing people in my life...

Who are yours?

What did they do?

As I reflect on them...I found a common thread in each of them...

Here are my top 3...in chronological order...

#1 - Barb Ferguson (I was 15 years old)
#2 - My Mentor (name withheld by his request long ago) (I was 25 years old)
#3 - Lori...my wife (I was 40 years old)

What do they have in common?

All of them accepted me as I was and made me believe that I was capable of much more than that...

How did they do the second part of that common thread?

Each expected it...as if their presence was at the beginning of my journey and not at an apex!

What a gift each of them have been to me...and continue to be...their presence is constant in my life...whether real...like Lori...or in my memories...

Barb believed that I was a great philosopher!  She taught me that "the unexamined life was not worth living!"

She taught me Socratic questioning...and taught me to write!

She introduced me to a fellow named Plato...

She taught me to deconstruct and reconstruct...

During a teacher's strike she risked her position as head of the high school history department and met me at a dumpy restaurant to review a term paper that I was writing...she read it and said that it was excellent for a high schooler...and I was elated!  Then she said that it was not even close to what she knew I was capable of writing...and that I should go back and write it at my level of performance...and I did!

I have never lost that lesson and that passion!

When we talked the other day...it was if no time at all had passed!  In 4 more years she'll be 80 years old!  She is still teaching!  Teaching is her passion and I have been blessed by her belief in me!  I know that many others have too...she planted a seed of inquisitiveness in every one of the students that she engaged with!

She believed in me!  I will not make her wrong!

My Mentor...what can I say!  He believed more in me and what I could do than I ever believed was possible.  I am still striving to live up to his expectations!  He believed that I was and could continue to be the best manager that people could ever have...he believed that my road would be tough...yet I would at some time in my life...be recognized for my efforts!  I believe him...and will do that because I do not want to see him wrong!

Lori...she picked me up at one of the worst times in my life!  I was shattered...and yet...she believed in me!  She continues to do so...and her belief drives me to ever higher performance and constant re-examination of my life...and my efforts...and my values...I will not let her down...why?

Because she believes in me!  I do not want her to be wrong!

All of these people have created a legacy...for themselves...but

They also are driving me to create one for myself!

It is easy to get disillusioned and depressed and frustrated and impatient...and just give up!

But I will not for them and for me!  They believed in me!  I will return that confidence by living up to what they believe I am capable of!  I will work as hard as I can to make it happen!  I will not wait for it...

Good things do not come to those who wait...it comes to those who work for it!

That is one of the ingredients of a legacy...a legacy does not come easily...it requires work...

Who are the three people in your life that have most influenced you?

Why?

Will you carry that legacy on?

Enough said on this topic!

Listen to the words of this song...it has something that we can learn from our youth!

Success has a lot to do with being what others see you can be.  I have learned that lesson.  I did a ton of research on the Pygmalion effect while working on my Masters degree.  An interesting thing that I learned from the study was the relationship between what others thought a person was capable of and the overall performance of that individual.  The bottom-line...others play as much of a role in your success as you yourself!  There is no longer such thing as independent successes...you can not go it alone!

That does not mean that your performance and success is entirely in the hands of others...I have a simple formula that can help get the control back into your hands...

That will be the topic of future updates!

I wouldn't want to give it all to you today and never have you come back!

SHIFTING GEARS! (Kind of...iTalentCafe)

For those who follow on Linkedin, Facebook, or Twitter, you have probably noticed that I initiated "Groups" called iTalentCafe on each site.  It also has a corresponding website http://www.italentcafe.com/

I have a cool vision for this site.  It will be a place that is built for world-class professionals, by world-class professionals.

The purpose is to connect the best and the brightest with organizations with needs.  People are at the bay of job search sites like Ladders, Linkedin, Monster...and many more...They are relatively the same...

This is a place where people get discovered!

We need a world-class web designer to build this into something great!
We need a world-class web marketer to get the word out
We need world-class recruiters to post real needs out there
and so on...

It is purely voluntary....

But think about the kind of visability!

Who built that marvelous website?
They get the credit and the publicity!

Who marketed that?
They get the credit and the publicity!

Who was that guy running the open mike night?
They get the credit and the publicity!

If you know world-class people with talent...

Push them our way...while they are job hunting...they can be making a contribution to the website and show off what they can do...perhaps they get discovered and make it BIG TIME!

I am loving this...I need your help to make this great...please join in and pass that news and the links around...get them to join our groups...and step up to this great challenge!

Have a great day...

Make next week even more successful!

True Adulthood in Leadership...

Good Morning!

I had to start this update with a fond memory!  The final scene from the Matrix, which many do not know, was how I introduced my version of Whitebelt training!

I believe that it is possible to create a world without borders and fear of change...where it can go is strictly limited by the courage and the creativity of the people involved.

It was nice to go back to that memory and relive the hope that I had while teaching this...

Shifting gears!

Although it was a short week...I bet that you stayed the course in whatever you had chosen to do and wrapped it up before taking time to be thankful!  Isn't that the responsible thing to do?

It is sad that we (as a nation) must have an official holiday to remind us of a character trait that all adults should implicitly have...a spirit of thankfulness...one that flows naturally...rather than a scheduled event!

Thankfulness is an essential element in success!

The odds are stacked against us in every aspect of our lives.  Failure is more probable than success...yet we fail to recognize that!  ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF FAILURE'S HIGHER PROBABILITY...

That narrow view is rather childish and selfish...thinking that we can or deserve to be successful...

That is just one of the behaviors that we have to be fully aware of in order for us to develop into great leaders!

When I think about adulthood...(especially in relation to leadership) I think of it as an ever growing responsibility.

It is having the right to (or for) specific tasks...it means that others trust us to do "the right" things...

DUH!

Yet many miss the boat when it comes to adulthood...

Adulthood means that when something is done...it does not create extra work for others...(like cleaning up the mess)...

Adulthood means that one does not have to be reminded...

Adulthood means that the task will be accomplished as good as or better than if someone else did it...

Adulthood means that value is derived from that individual's effort that is shared by all those touched by the effort...

Adulthood includes recognition for that contribution...

Adulthood...means...leaving it better for having been there...

If the world was filled with adults...think of how much better the world would be!

I once read that the trait that domesticated dogs...was actually the absence of a trait...domestic dogs lost the ability to grow-up.  Domestic dogs are puppies...and will always be!

Man in a general sense has been domesticated...and...lost the real ability to grow up...

Some of those childish characteristics are actually lauded in leadership circles...

The mental image that comes to mind is the immature and "unruly" bully in grade school...

Don't be that or promote those behaviors in others...

Seek out and promote real "adult" behaviors....

Like Thankfulness...

Helpfulness...

Wisdom...

The list is not that long...

Shifting gears...again!

I do not know if my research has made this more apparent to me or if I have moved into a different circle...

I have noticed many people quoting others and quoting others and quoting others!

Has noone an original thought?

Do these people need to justify their behaviors based upon the words of other individuals?

It looks like..."HEY...I believe this and it is all right because some famous person said this!"

I am so disappointed in those who continually quote people and lack the creativity or courage to take their own stand!

The question is...would you rather quote or be quoted?

I know where I want to stand!

It appears to me that children quote...

Adults are quoted!

I seek adulthood...thank you very much!

To those who overuse quoting...stop talking about it and start putting those words into action...they speak louder than words!  (was that a quote?)  You'll be much more effective if people emulate your behaviors than if they simply say you words!

That sounds like...I want to be like him when I grow up...doesn't it?

A true leadership adult is seldom quoted, but often emulated...

That is the bottom-line...stop talking about it and work to exhibit those behaviors that will be emulated and carried into this generation and those beyond!

Enough Said!

I hope that you have had a Thankful week!

I hope that it was restful!

I hope that between today and the next time you are thankful is full prosperity and health and generosity!

Have a great week!

The Cost of Success...

Good Morning!

Another successful week...I bet!

How can it not be?  Especially given who you are!

I am not saying that you are stubborn or persistent, or focused, or determined or committed or the other host of things that make you who you are (or am I?)...

I guess that I am!

Those are the characteristics of individuals who succeed at what they set out to do...whatever it is that they set out to do!

In some ways...you were made that way...and you can not avoid being like that...without being dissatisfied with your lot in life!

That is the burden that you carry!

It is a higher calling!

It is a worthy career...yet scary...and constantly challenged and challenging!

Don't you love it?

I do!

There are many risks and costs associated with what you are doing...

It is not a simply a rout job...

It draws on your every creative talent...and constantly stretches you!

You can not help but grow...

You can not sit static for a moment!

You need support from every side...left and right and above and below...in order for you to be successful!

At the same time it all depends on you!  ...it is a lonely path!

Find individuals with like desires and cling to them as if they were a life boat!

They are!

I was moved today to write about the costs associated with the path(s) that you have choosen in life.  There is no path that does not have an assciated cost...whether you are a PI professional or...I guess...whatever...

Choosing one path is at the cost of all of the others that you had in front of you...

Whatever path that you choose...NEVER feel remorse!

If you do...life has beaten you!

If you can not shake remorse...switch paths!  It is never too late!

I have learned that!

If you can teach this "old dog" that new trick...anyone can learn it!

There are many components related to success...do not fixate on a single element!

There are many proponents of visioning and passion and positive attitudes and planning and persistence and focus and...the list is almost endless...

These people fixate on a single element and miss the beauty of the blend!

They miss the boat!

Do not fall prey to a single discipline!  ONE ALONE NEVER WORKS!

When taken alone and used alone...these secrets of success are nothing more than an opiate that clouds your success and numbs you to reality....

Combine your vision, and your passion and your "can do" attitude with everything else!

This is what it costs to succeed...

The cost is high...but worth it!

There are no twists or hidden threads in this week's update (as there usually are)...it is straight-forward and has a single topic...

You do not need to be a CEO or president to be successful...you simply need to be who you are and be on a continual path of grwth!

Like the old Army saying..."be...all you can be!"

Like the Army...it requires basic training and specialization and disciple and persistence...it requires commitment and loyalty and dedication!

These are the elements of success and the currency with which you by the right to be who you are!

Spend them wisely!

Also...save them for those times that you need them!

Invest your riches and you'll achieve what you set out to achieve!

Have a great weekend!

Enough said!

The Brutal Attack on Positive Attitudes

Good Morning!

Before we jump into today...take a moment to ponder the fact of how lucky we are!  We arose this morning, in the dawn of the human age's awakening, a true consciousness of the universe and and the abstract reality of possibilities!  I was awed to think that for the billions of years (within the life of the universe) prior and for the millions of years of human existence, there has not been an intellectual and scientific awareness like ours (to my knowledge)!  And we have been given a seat within this drama!  What a priveledge!  What are you doing to participate?  What is your cosmic contribution...are you acting like our ancestors or are you an active member of the future!  This was my awe inspiring thought for this morning...what a glorious chance to participate in this chapter in the human epic!

OK...ENOUGH RAMBLING......NOT!

I bet that you have had another great week!

You "won some" and you "learned something!"  What more can you ask?

Next week will be progressively better...for your having done so...it is the path of Continuous Improvement...

The Continuous Improvement Management Methodology...CIMM for those who love letters!

The important thing is that you are committed to this path and thay you stay the course...

It is a difficult thing to constantly stay on the "High" performance "Road!"

There are times that just doing a "meets requirements" job...is so alluring!

We all get tired...but we can not give up!

Doing an average job is the "kiss of death!"

Why?

The moment that you do...the "I told you..." people will crawl from the gutters or soar from some lofty point in the heavens, to point out that all of your work in the past was just a facade...and...a farce...and that you are no different than the rest of them...

It is important to know and constantly be aware that the vermin...better yet, "vultures" of an organization are on constant vigil..."looking" for weaknesses...and failures to provide their next meal!

I have to chase down this rabbit hole...SORRY!

Vultures are interesting creatures...

For years, ornithologists believed that they possessed uncanny eye-sight!

For years, they believed that they were related to hawks and eagles...because of the way the soared while "looking for food."

They were wrong on both counts!

Let's address the latter first...

Through DNA testing they found that vultures and storks are more closely related. It "put to rest" a long standing controversy! The last thing that I read after this enlightenment was "this explains why the skulls of vultures and storks are so similar..." Scientists knew of the physiological resemblance for years...yet they wrote it off as an anomoly...a physical resemblance would not convince them that these two birds were related...they were classifed as raptors because of the way they flew...physical resemblence could not unveil the real truth...

...even after years of repeated testing of bird DNA...the controversy still pops its ugly head up...from those who refuse to take two scientifically wonderful data points...for what they mean!

Now the first...later...

Ornithologists long argued that vultures had uncanny eyesight! How else could they find a half-decomposed field mouse lying in a woods?

The answer actually is embedded within the rhetorical question...

The answer? SMELL!

Vultures have an uncanny sense of smell...

As they soar around...hundreds, if not thousands of feet in the air...they are not looking for food...

They are sniffing...and can hone in on the source very quickly!

A budding scientist proved this by burying some raw meat in a forest and watching it for a while...

Guess what?

The vultures found the decomposing meat...dug it up and ate heartily!

Fresh meat set just a few yards away was totally ignored until it too became rotten!

He repeated this experiment numerous times with the same results...and independent research found exactly the same thing!

It’s their sense of smell that is phenomenal!

Vultures do not need to be within seeing distance to find death and decomposition...they can smell it for many miles...traces on the air currents upon which they soar...I find that totally amazing!

Back to our discussion...

Cultural Gravity...

It is a normal human tendency to try to pull extreme behavior back to what they believe is the norm...

Cultures desire normal behavior in order to survive....

Cultures detest "ab-normal" behavior...anything that strays from the mean on the bell-curve!

Cultures are attuned to the identification and response to anything out of the norm...

Extrememly great behavior is reigned in because it threatens the "normal"...

And cultures attack extremely poor behvaior also...the reason being...to elevate themselves...that is when they point out a behavior or performance that they feel is below them...and the mass nods in agreement and disgust!

That behavior is what creates and maintains a culture...I call this behavior "cultural gravity!"

Like physical gravity...It is the pull by a larger body or mass upon that behavior which is tending to stray from that norm...

Think about that for a moment...it is not unlike our solar system! Planets do not stray...smaller bodies are pulled into the larger bodies...The moons to planets...planets to the sun...the sun to the galaxy and the galaxy to the universe...and so on!

Things tend to stay the same...and gravitate towards a central point!

That tendency also permeates the human condition!

Cultures do not want to change...unless...there is disruption...a crisis!

Crisis (to a culture) means pain!

Cultures do not change unless there is a benefit...

Extreme pain gives them an extreme reason to seek something different and sometimes even extreme differences...CHANGE!

Some may say that because humans and cultures are reasonable...they can be convinced (through logic) that change is beneficial...

I have seldom seen that happen...

Even in Ancient Greece...the most logical of all societies...change was VERY difficult!

There is a story of a great philosopher who was put to death because he challenged the status quo!

Hmmmmm....could that be Socrates?

So my thoughts lead me to think that trying to convince a culture that they need to change...with only words and logic is a nearly impossible task!

More often than not...it leads to hemlock!

So what is a change agent to do?

Convince them through action!

Show them that what you stand for is faster, better and cheaper than what they are doing...create internal crises by comparison!

Internalized crisis...without pain...but it is REAL!

That calls for absolute consistency in your performance...and continuous exceeding of expectations!

This type of work is adrenalin filled and demanding!

Average performance will only convince or confirm to, your audience, that average performance is OK!

Your audience must see you out-perform them consistently with less effort...ALL THE TIME!

Now you have created an environment that is in crisis!

Now you have proven a disparity!

This takes time!

This is why I say...plan what you need to do and do it!

In between the plan and the performance is an announcement of intent...(this is today's hint!)
Make tomorrow significantly better than today!

Don't talk happy talk...do it!

SPEAKING OF HAPPY TALK...

A book recently hit the stands that (with the cold precision of an assassin) attacked the Power of Positive Thinking and Purpose Driven Life and everything in between!

I believe that this was a long time coming and well deserved by those fanatics that overused this concept for their own gain!

I have watched people spend their entire life (I would rather say "wasted") looking for their purpose...and people driven to suicide by fanatically happy people around them...

I am an advocate of positive thinking and authentic happiness...but for different reasons!

Let's hit authentic happiness first...

I like being happy infinitely more than I like being sad and depressed...so I choose to be happy...

I do not choose happiness because happy get more stuff!

I advocate happiness because it is better than sadness!

END OF STORY!

Now let's look at "Purpose."

It is a bit more complex...but people believe that they have this higher calling and they seek it with everything they have...rather than realizing that where they are is their higher calling!

Talk about missing your boat!

Crazy happy fanatics...and people who have deluded themselves into their higher calling gives this whole power of positive thinking philosophy a bad name!

It is time to call these people out and isolate them from the real positive thinkers...they are not the same...

It is time to separate out the crazy happy people and isolate them from the authentically happy people...

The abnormal behavior here is not the attitude condition...but that from which the facade is built!
This book does a great job of that...

Positive thinking...purpose...happiness are all good things for wise and intelligent people who do not abuse the gift...

These are traits that are found at the beginning, during and at the destination of a true adherent's journey...it is not a means to an end...

When an individual treats a personality trait as the vehicle of success..They detract from the gift and are simply a hollow Manichean...success comes (if it comes at all) to them is through luck rather than hard work...

Plan your work...adjust and ensure success...be happy along the way...

It is a full venue or no venue at all...if you fail...or your job stinks...thse organizational "vultures" have a highly attuned sense of smell and they'll pick up on your mediocre performance from miles away...swoop in and live on your carrion!

Do not give them an opportunity to feed off of you or your performance...

Like the real vultures...they'll totally ignore true success as if it doesn't exist...that has no nutritional value to them...they thrive in an environment of failure...they find it and feed off of it!  Do not let them feed off of you!

Stand in defiance of the carrion eaters...by constantly residing in the world of the living and improving...they will not be able to even find you!

Stand, (with me) for just a moment, in awe of our role in the human journey!  Consciousness is an absolutely amazing thing and we should (the human race) not simply be a meaningless blip in the universe's history...make it better for your having been there!

Enough Said!

The "Fire's" Warmth...

Good Morning!

There are days that I can not supress my enthusiasm for life...and there are those other days!  It is a roller coaster!  Over time I have learned to create those components within myself that catalyze the feeling that I have when I am having a good day...so when the bad days come...I can fight them at their level rather than fall prey to the effects!

Everyone has "ups and downs..."

Some times your plans do not come to fruition...some times narrow minded supervision gets in the way...some times...you get in the way!

Don't let it get to you!

Pick the path and stay on it!

The Power of Positive Thinking and Positive Attitudes has been challenged lately!

Many advocates have gotten defensive...Me?

I think it should be constantly challenged!...

Why?

I do not believe that positive mental attitude does not make anyone anymore successful...but...

...What it does do...is makes them happier...and oblivious to what is going on around them...NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS...I AM HAPPY!

...This is a situation where ignorance is bliss...AND...it is also helpful in achieving goals!

Why?

Because...What makes people successful is hard work and persistence...people that are happier seem to work harder and stay on task...so from my perspective...positive attitudes do effect success...but not for the mystical reasons that many proport...but just plain cause/effect...Work hard and you'll reap benefits!

I have to laugh...We have a tendency to make things too complex...

...Look at things from the simpliest perspectives...it is generally the real reason...

Shifting Gears!

Some of you have heard pieces of this story in the past...

When I was growing up (Late Teens, Early 20s)...I hung with many Native American Friends...

They were rather reclusive...that is...they kept to people with "like mind" and like themselves...

It was an interesting...

I was accepted into their midst and got to see the inner workings of the real culture...

In the evenings...the older members often got together and sat around a fire and talked...and sang and told stories...I loved that!

I got invited to these campfire gatherings...the strange thing was that my invitation was often over many of my Native American peers...but the elders wanted me there (not the boys...which confused me) and every time I was there...I was invited...in a way this created a bit of a rivalry and a jealousy between them and I...but I just went with it!

One evening the oldest guy started talking and everyone immediately quieted down...it was the first time I had heard him talk!

He looked right at me and said that the difference between humans and white people was that white people built BIG fires and sat far apart...humans built small fires and sat close together...sharing the warmth of the fire and of the warmth of eachother...

The group nodded respectfully and...

Then he got up and left...

They sat quiet for a while and I broke the silence by saying...

"..he is old and tired...must of needed to go to sleep..."

They laughed!

I sat dumbfounded and then one of the older guys said..."you don't get it...he left so that we could share our warmth between us!"

Warmth...I thought it was heat!

I suddenly realized that I had missed the whole message and from that point learned to dig deeper into meanings...

What a great gift that he shared with me!

A Bend in the Road...

I read a series of articles over the past few days that discussed (argued about) how much water a person should consume on a daily basis...

No one could agree on the right amount...

...a static, 1 ounce of fluid per pound of body weight...

...consumption being dependent upon activity...

...input should be based upon your output...

and on and on...

But something suddenly hit me...

NOT ONE of these articles noted that more than 1.7 billion (YES 1,700,000,000) people do not have access to fresh clean water on a daily basis...ZILCH, NO WATER, NADA...ZERO!

That seems a bit more important to me...than how much we should suck down!

Should I drink 80 ounces of water per day or 160 ounces...?

Is warm water or cold water better for my body?

What a narrow and selfish existence!

Why can't every article written about fresh water, be required to include a tag line about how many people need water...PERIOD?  REMEMBER THAT NUMBER 1,700,000,000  1.7 BILLION!  UNTIL THAT NUMBER IS ZERO!

How sad!

Shifting gears!

I am jumping all over the place...aren't I?
Our myopic view of life often creates problems...and even more sad is that we remain clueless even after the catestrophe is caused by us!  Or we refuse to take any blame...or responsibility...

I just had a discussion, with a VERY wise man who blames all of the world's woes on the most subtle of "greeds."  All of our problems stem from greed!

I remember being intrigued by a theory called the "Butterfly effect."

To refresh your memory it says that every event is somehow infinitely linked to many occurances in the future...

The batting of a butterfly's wings in western Africa leading to a major hurricane that wipes out a Gulf Coast City...is a more direct example...but it could be a set of absolutely crazy and unrelated connections...but it is a seemingly inconsequential event leading to something of world shattering significance...

The insignificant splitting of one single atom, effecting 4 more and so on...until we have a thermal nuculear  explosion!  Interesting?

Shifting gears AGAIN!

How about your purpose?

Courtney and I got into an interesting discussion tonight...she is working on her next Science Fair project...

It is about isolating and confirming the presence of sugar in the husk of the Queen Palm seed and then converting that sugar into ethanol...to be used as a bio-fuel...it is a carry-on project from last year's "extract the plant fat and conveert it to diesel fuel project...and uses the waste from the oil refinement to get more fuel from this source...

As we talked about plants and seeds...we discussed that plants have many different ways of spreading their seeds...some just drop them...

Some use a sweet fleshy fruit to attract animals to eat them and the actual seed is not digested...so the animal spreads them...

With others the seed is so hard that animals cannot eat the outside...and drop the seed in frustration!

The Queen Palm appears to have a husk that animals like to eat...but they drop the "baby" coconuts...because they can not gnaw through the shell...

Seems like a combination of 2 of the concepts!

But that was just the beginning of the discussion...

We talked about purpose...What really is a plant's purpose...or an animal's purpose...

When you think about a plant...it only grows and lives to create seeds to make more of that plant...but why?

And as we talked...the same holds true for animals...their only purpose is to propagate...but for what purpose?

There really is no meaning to life...or living...when you look at it this way!

When considered on an individual level...there is no reason or value for existence!  There is no purpose!

EVEN FOR HUMANS!

That is pretty deep!

It is only when the entire existence is considered in a system that there is any purpose...then a plant does exist to feed herbivores...and so on...then there is some meaning...but is it enough?...but think about it...we exist to serve another level?  I do not exist to die!  But in the system...many of us do!

Deeply philosophical but think about that for a moment...

Why are you existing?

Are you an individual or part of a system?

Is there a purpose for you...some worthwhile conntection...or are you a drain on the earth's resources...?

Purpose breaks down when you attempt to stand as an individual...and only exists in the connections between things...are you food...fodder...or...just plain useless...or do you really mean something?

Those are deep and  freaky thoughts!  The coolest thing is to share this type of philosophical thinking with a 14 year old!  I LOVE THEM!

Are we there yet?  Are we there yet?

Yes we are!  Let's tie this all together!

We have to be VERY careful about narrowing our focus and the effect that it has on our meaning and the impacts of our actions!

When you worry about eating right or drinking enough...think bigger than yourself and take an extra moment to consider the impact of your actions...am I taking food or water out of the mouths and stomaches of people who have nothing?

Are my actions and my narrow thoughts impacting others in extreme places?

Does my driving a block instead of walking add to the global warming issue?

Is the narrow and self-serving nature of my opinions keep me from real understanding and perspectives?

Am I experiencing the true warmth of others?

Do I build a small fire and share its warmth with others...and sit close enough to them to share the warmth that they have?

These are questions that you can answer for yourself in the privacy of your own assessment of your actions and the subsequent impacts...

Your meaning and purpose will never be found in your substance...but only in your connections...outside of yourself...the things most intangible...

It is nothing mystical...it is hard work!

Enough Said!

The Rarest and Most Highly Prized of all Human Virtues...

Good Morning!

I know that you have been successful in your endeavors this week!  Congratulations on a job well-done!

Whether you starting a new phase in your career or going on to next week's challenges within your current position...it is an opportunity to show what you are really made of...

Too many people go with the flow and miss the opportunities afforded them...I have yet to see someone swim without making waves!  If you are not swimming...you are sinking!

It is all about defining success and achieving it!

What is Success?

Success has as much to do with differentiation and that it has to do with results!

The vast majority of people go through life without a claim to fame!

This means that what they have accomplished is the same as everyone else...why notice?

VERY few have chiseled a legend...one that time can not remove from the hearts of those who know it!

Some legends are built upon a single epic accomplishment...others over a lifetime...

Whether a single event...or a long journey...there is one common element...

There was a difference made...a difference in the life of another or others...

Sometimes it was permanent...other times a fleeting but noticeable difference (a blip)!

But people felt it and recognized "the where and why" from which it came...it was because of you!

To become a legend...you must see it then be it! You must know what you need to do and then find the courage to do it...we all lack the confidence to be a legendary hero...ignore the thoughts of inadequacy!

Fight the odds...face them head-on...

Refusing to listen to the "Nay-sayers..."

Yet if we stick to theory...statistics tell us that we should not push extremes...

The probability of success lessens as we push the limits...

Then...tell me...how can anyone become a legend?  (You ask)

Are legends a matter of pure randomness?

Not at all...

Many of those, who have legendary status, have a virtue that almost assures that they would go into human history...

That virtue is called common sense!

It still boggles my mind that the rarest and most highly prized of all human virtues is called common sense!

That is a perfect example of an oxymoron!

(I have noticed that those who use this symantic combination are themselves morons! Perhaps that is the derivation of that word! LOL!)

OK...The humor break is over...and none to soon I gather!

I held for a long time that people born with Common Sense were VERY rare. Most of those who possessed it were experienced and often in the class of "elders." I had a hard time believing that a person could be taught common sense...until I looked a bit deeper into human behavior.

In the "olden days" story telling was a common practice. People gathered around the campfire or the dinner table and told stories. Hunters came in after a long day in the woods...and told their hunting stories...fishermen had their fishing stories...farmers had their farming stories...and everyone intently listened.

It was often written off as the "entertainment of the time"...but I have found that this tradition is much deeper!

Although what I am talking about is much more obvious...it goes back to the Greek culture and Aesop. Yes the fabled man of fables!

Aesop had stories that lead to a moral! "...and the moral of the story is..."

Shifting gears!

Common Sense is not simply the ability to identify what is needed...(cause/effect) it is deeper than that!

Common sense is the ability to identify the cause...the effect...AND... IMPACTS...ALL of the impacts!

To that end I built the Cause/Effect/Impact (C,E & I) analysis.

It is my way to teach people Common Sense...

I believe that Common Sense can be taught!

People who possess it and use it to create legendary performance know the causes...the effects...and most importantly...the IMPACTS!

Those who can warn the world around them of the impacts of actions...are tagged with Common Sense and become the heroes!

Many miss the "magic" that I was trying to produce in that simple technique!

Down Shifting...

Let's go back to the story telling...

People shared stories to share experiences and the subsequent impacts...

People who listened and really heard the stories...learned without experiencing!

Many heeded the morals of the stories and did not repeat the mistakes (impacts)...those lacking Common Sense did not and repeated history!

It is an interesting theory...but I believe that those who we say are born with common sense are really good listeners!

I have found that those people who I have termed as possessing Common Sense were also great listeners...I used to attribute their listening skills to the Common Sense that they possessed...but as I think deeper on this...I believe that their Common Sense is a result of their listening.

Listen to the "war stories"

Look for the morals and use them to your advantage!

Wrap-up (on this subject)

Let's tie everything that I have been rambling about into one consistent thought...

Common Sense can be an acquired skill...

It can come to an individual after years of success and failure (lessons learned from experience) (Lessons Learned is another tool set that I promote!)

It can come through listening to others...their stories and fables...and learning from them...(A subset of the Lessons Learned expecise)

It can come through an intense analytical tool set (the Cause/Effect/Impact)

It is not a single track...but if one wishes to acquire it in a relatively short period of time...all of this must be done...

All of the common sense in the world is of no use to anyone...unless you possess the courage to speak up and make a difference!

The legendary performance of epic heros is more about the courage that they had to make the difference than the difference that they made...

Join that select group and gather the courage to make the difference that you know is possible!

Enough Said on this topic!

Have a great weekend!

All the Lonely People...

GOOD MORNING!

I know that I caught the attention of my "more experienced" readers...with a line from Elenor Rigby by the Beatles!

It was a "deep" song in its day!  AND in a way...it remains timeless...because everywhere I go...whenever I make the effort to look...I see "lonely" people!  More on this later...

Downshift...

Before I go any further...I want everyone to know that I realize that this is not Saturday morning!  I received a note this morning from a dear person...who specifically called out a situation where many people of like backgrounds gather at a cafe and comiserate!  One could almost say...a gathering of dregs!

My first question is...WHY ARE YOU THERE?  Actually not!  I just had to say it!

After reading the note...and his questions and thoughts...I was moved to a "Special Edition" Weekend Update...because I had to respond AND I had no other blogsite to attach the thoughts to!

I have always held to the precept that the greatest accomplishments spring from the times when one is truly moved...perhaps this will be my BIG BREAK!

The cinematic industry has grasped this concept...think about how many movies you have seen where the hero or heroine (usually towards the end of the movie) has an epiphany or a self realization...and turns from their epic struggle...and overcomes all odds!

Then think of all of the enduring "sit-coms" that unite cast of people of common lonliness together (Cheers, Flo, MASH and 90210 are some that come to mind)...and the infinite number of situations that arise from them...and the fact that the viewing audience never waned! Why...because we all can relate!

All people are lonely!

UP-SHIFTING!

If there is such a word as up-shifting...but you get the point!

I have been considering doing a vBlog to augment my work on management and leadership development...

They would be 2-3 minute clips on a specific management topic...

If it can't be said in 3 minutes...you got to wonder!

and the main blog would have a secondary vBlog called "Survivor Man-ager"  A take off of the Discovery Channel "Survivor Man" series...where a guy is dropped into some inhospitable place and he has to survive for a week!

Where am I going with this?  Just looking for your feedback on whether you'd watch it...AND...

There is always an "AND!"

That note from this morning...brought back a memory...

Of a framed poem that I had hung on the wall...in many of my offices...

It was my MISSION for many years...and it has been lost through the moves...yet I can recall it perfectly!

Rather than doing a vBlog of it...I am going to return to the dark ages and recite it for you!

This will be a great exercise...

Deserata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud & agressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your acheivements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many people strive for high ideals; and everywhere the world is full of heroism.

Be yourself,

Especially, do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of Spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.

Beyond a wholesome disipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you the, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be careful. Strive to be Happy.

This poem was attributed to a fellow named Max Ehrmann, who copy-writed it in the late 1920's.  Some people claim that it actually goes back to the late 1690's...but that doesn't matter...it is timeless and contains advice that we all should heed!

I think I did pretty good recalling it and its history!  I will do a web search after I post it...just to confirm the accuracy...but it is a driving set of axioms in my life...it should be pretty close!

SHIFTING AGAIN!

Our journey today is on a winding road!

The line in the poem..."If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself..."

Lonely people gather at bars, churches, diners, clubs, street corners, work, parks...I could fill this blogsite, with that list alone, when I think about it...

...In fact...

The reason for being at any one of those places includes an attempt to quell the lonliness!  People go to a diner to eat...heck...there are perfectly good trashcans behind the establishment that have the same food...for a lot less money! (just joking) yet people gather together for the food AND the companionship...

Community!

These are people seeking commonality...

In my blog about "You can get LESS..." I talked about MY FACT that the differences between people are really the commonality of the same!

People tend to band together under a single flag...

If you find yourself marching with a group of people under the same flag...you seriously...have something in common with them...

Many people jade their presence within a group, by thinking that they are there to "help them."  Unless you are a professional "shrink" and getting paid for it...or are donating your time to helping them...do not deceive yourself!  You are there because of some common thread...

People want to be heard!  People need to talk...with people who understand them...they need safety and security...and a non-judgemental environment!  People simply want to hear that they are OK!

It is confirmation of their existence!

People want to know that they have value!

Everyone rises or sinks to a level of commonality...for that reason!

Look at Maslow's hierarchy...

People who are simply surviving unite with people of like situations...to comiserate...and mutually survive...

Visit a prison...it is a huge gathering of people who broke major laws and all claim to be innocent!  (I had to do it!)

The fact is...that life's situations drive us and them to different groups...people with whom they-all can relate...

It is a common language!

People seeks others of "common language" so that they can be heard and understood!

That gets us to the real root of the situation!

HIGH GEAR!

Do not think yourself more or less than those around you...if you are communicating...you have something in common...the language...

Language is an interesting concept...just by itself!

True communication is the result of common experiences...

When a person says.."X"

Everyone has an interpretation of "X"

The message has truly been communicated when the intended and same mental image of "X" is elicited across each listener.

That is what people desire!

Commonality of mental images!

This commonality leads to understanding...which in turn leads to confirmation...which hopefully leads to comfort!

AND THAT is what people seek...COMFORT!

I can not start with a Beatles song without quoting Bob Marley!

"...Everything's gonna be all-right!"

That is what a person required from the moment of their birth and they still require it throughout their entire life...

Comfort!

The reason that you are where you are at...is comfort!

The people described to me in the note...all hurt!

We all hurt...

They hurt because they feel that they were injustly hurt and did not deserve it!

They need to be heard and told that "everything is gonna be all-right!"

EVERYONE needs to hear that!

We all have experiences in our lives that call us to question our value and contribution...

Are we talkers?

or...

Are we listeners?

Deserata reminds me of the role that I can derive the most meaning and understanding from!

I have less the need to talk and more the need to listen...that has come over a long time of talking and the realization that I am no different than the other to whom I am talking!

"...all the lonely people...where do they all come from?"

Enough Said!

The Oft Forgotten, yet MOST 2 Important Words...

Good Morning!

This has been a triumphant week for me!  Not because of huge accomplishments...but because I accomplished what I set out to do!  Some of my accomplishments were rather small and insignificant' if I were to compare them to what you are doing...yet they made all the difference in my vision...which is what I need to be focused upon...

How about you?

Did you plan your accomplishments and remain focused?

Did you stay your course?

Did you make a difference?

I am proud of you!

I watched a clip the other day...from a late night television show...the guest (a comedian) was ranting about how WE do not appreciate the things that we have...like flight!

His routine was so funny...but it had a sharp edge of truth!

One of his lines were..."everyone on the plane should be screaming "OH MY GOD! WE ARE FLYING!" instead of complaining about the 20 minute delay!

"...You are sitting in a chair...in the sky!...

"...Yet we complain about the seat's comfort..."

I have it posted on my facebook...if you are curious about it!

Entitlement is a subtle beast.

It can sneak into one's life without an inkling that it is present!

We live in an age of miracles...but have become caloused to what we get every day!

That oftentimes is the result of not stopping and taking the time to find the real meaning of what we are doing or encountering!

Many comedians are making a ton of money...on that flaw in the human condition!

They talk about those flaws and we laugh at our own stupidity!  Mostly out of embarrassment and avoidance of the truth!

Put an end to that humor...look entitlement directly in the face and appreciate what is happening to you!

Dig a bit deeper than what you are getting...to the how you are getting it...it is miraculous!

It is a child-like appreciation of the wonders of living...that we should NEVER lose!

HOW?

We have a tool, at our disposal, that the beast "Entitlement" fears!

Leaders...in fact all of us...should be using that tool as often as possible!

It is two words!

THANK YOU!

Those who know me well...have seen me go on "Thank-you Crusades!"

People (in general) do not say "thank you" enough!

Leaders (ESPECIALLY) do not say "thank you" enough..."I have paid you to do that...isn't that enough?  Heck no!  The company has paid me!  Unless my salary comes directly from your paycheck...thank me!

Appreciation drives a deeper understanding of the meaning of the act or action or results!

I challenge everyone who claims to be a leader to...

Do every assignment that they give in parallel (independently) with the person that they assigned the task to...

Compare your product with the product of your subordinate!  Is it significantly better?  It should be...if you are tempted not to say thank you!

(OK...you do not or can't do that)

Then that admission should be part of the "thank-you!"

You do not have the time...or the talent!

RECOGNIZE THAT!

Leaders have been mislead to believe that leadership requires a discriminating and critical element.

WRONG!

If it does not meet standard...it is a leader's job to work WITH the person to take it to the next level...not just critical words...EFFORT!

A leader should show they are capable of the performance they require...they lead...that means being out front!  Not talking from behind a desk, in some fancy office!

Critiques should come with a vesting!  If a leader has something to say about an individual's work...then they should step up and help them do it to their level of expectation...not just send them back to "do it again!"

If a subordinate is working "day and night" to meet a deadline...the leader should be there with them...not sitting in the comfort of their home and family!

I am not saying this to underplay the importance of home and family...but the stupidity and cruelity of unrealistic deadlines!  If a deadline is given...there are impacts...and the leader should sacrifice as much or more than the person assigned!

Leadership does not give someone the right to hurt another's life...yet many leaders think that have that right!

That in and of itself is entitlement!

If a leader does that...he or she is not a leader in my book...he or she is a bully...

Leadership is an obligation to make someone's life better!

ENOUGH SAID!

I need to publically thank Lori for her persistent support of my (OUR) vision!

She is working day and night to provide the breathing room to make this possible!

LORI...THANK YOU!

She could complain...rather...she stepped up!

Her actions have confirmed the togetherness that I have always felt with her!

There is an integrity in her fabric that is rare in people these days!

THANK YOU!

NOT ENOUGH EVER SAID!

Take the time to thank the people around you!

There are 3 elements that need to be present in true thankfulness!

1. A recognition of the effort required (and sacrifices)
2. A recognition of the results (do not forget to recognize that you couldn't do it)

3. A recognition of the impact

Become vested in the efforts of your team...not just a by-stander!

THANK YOU for "listening"  I already know that if you hear this message...it will make a difference in your leadership style and take your team to unimagineable levels!
